The new revised and updated Eighth edition of Partha?s IAP Textbook of Pediatrics (PIAPTBP) is devoted to newborns, children and adolescents?the future citizens of India whose nurture and care are our goal, concern and commitment. It is our humble tribute to the IAP, which is at the vanguard of the care of children of all hues and colors, at all ages and without barriers; that trained and fostered us as responsible professionals to care for children with love and compassion. The discipline of pediatrics has made substantial advances in the last decade in preventive and therapeutic care. New perspectives for the care of children have been opened and many thrust areas requiring immediate or continued attention to decrease morbidity and mortality have been demarcated. These have provided fresh impetus to improve knowledge, harvest new information and continue the process of learning. The Government of India also has embarked on new initiatives for the welfare of newborns, children and adolescents. These developments have necessitated the need for publication of an updated 8th edition of the book after a gap of six years. This was also inspired by the enthusiastic response to the previous editions from practicing pediatricians, postgraduates, undergraduates as well as faculty of departments of pediatrics throughout India and SAARC countries. It has been our endeavor to present the subject in a simplified and practical manner to provide adequate clinical guidance to pediatricians so that children derive the benefits of early diagnosis and optimal treatment. The basic simple and practical outline of the book is retained. We have tried our best to oversee that the ?art and science? of clinical pediatrics maintains its central position without being dwarfed by newer technical advances. The book represents a substantial revision and reorganization of the text based on a complete review of the field of pediatrics. This is not a watered-down version; efforts have also been made to keep a balance with incorporation of the curricular needs of the undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers in pediatrics. This edition has 272 chapters crafted by 377 national and international experts and arranged in 24 major sections brought out in three volumes. Each section is reviewed and edited by subject experts as section editors. The text has been revised and updated by adopting three-tier review and edit system, keeping in view of the present needs and possible future requirements of practitioners and students of pediatrics. The entire contents of the textbook are reorganized to provide relevant clinical information and national priorities at one site, in line with the National Medical Council of India?s new competency-based curriculum of perinatology, neonatology, pediatrics and adolescent medicine. We have made every effort to provide up-to-date content in a simplified, practical step-by-step manner in a crisp, concise and yet comprehensive text.
