In fact, Hafiz's ghazals are entirely his own and inimitable creations. reach, was not in the pre-Hafiz ghazal. Hafiz introduced variations in context without undermining the unity of the ghazal. Before Hafiz, the ghazal had received its almost perfect, mature form in the hands of Sadi. The appearance that Hafiz gave it by recasting it in his own mold is almost impossible. Hafiz's first book of poetry was published in Calcutta in 1791. We are fortunate that poet Subhash Mukhopadhyay volunteered to take the lead in bringing the work of a timeless poet from the Persian city of approximately six and a half hundred years ago to Bengali readers. Any translation is difficult. The transition from poem to poem is a more difficult task. But when a major poet is inspired by the work of another great poet to present that work to others, then it becomes a vow to achieve the impossible. This translation-poems of Subhash Mukhopadhyay is a worthwhile celebration of that vow. . With amazing compassion and rare ability, he has made Hafiz's poetry an absolute delight for Bengali poetry lovers.
